Essential Oils for the New Year: by Amy Bierstedt

Essential Oils for the New Year: by Amy Bierstedt

When I think of taking better care of myself in the new year, I of course, think of eating healthier foods, getting more exercise, simplifying, and organizing my life.  But I also think of something that wouldn’t even have crossed my mind a few years ago: essential oils.  You may recall this previous post where I shared how I was first introduced to essential oils and how our family has used them for aches and pains, sleeplessness, allergies, etc. over the years…well, I would like to take that a step further in 2018 to hopefully realize some of the benefits that oils have to offer in the way of mental health as well.  And who better to help us understand some of these benefits than local mom and total #bossbabe Amy Bierstedt of Boerne’s From Scratch Farm?

Amy, if you haven’t been fortunate enough to meet her just yet, is a local Boerne-ite, boy-mom (x2), owner/founder/artisan/photographer at not just From Scratch Farm but also Shutter Happy Photography, primary curator at Craft Curate, blogger, and all-around just amazing person.  When Amy is not busy photographing gorgeous kiddos or making and selling her homemade goods, you can usually find her actively supporting the local 4H, participating (and winning...a lot) in the Kendall County Fair, spreading kindness around town, or you know…creating national holidays.

But today?  Today, Amy is here to help us on our wellness journey for 2018, and here’s what she has to say:

The holidays are busy!  And the new year can be very stressful.  Just looking ahead at all of the birthdays to celebrate, meetings to attend, deadlines to meet, sports events to cheer, graduations to prepare for, big payments to make, etc... can make one's heart sink with dread or flutter with nervousness.  Stress can take a toll on one's spiritual, emotional, and overall health.  So, if you don't have a counter-plan in place, now is the time to act.  The start of any new year is an obvious time to get back to church, reconnect with the family that loves you, and find new friends and a great support system.  It's also time to find new ways to uplift, focus, and relax.

There are lots of products and procedures out there that can help with tension, mood, and overall health (who wouldn't love a massage, right?!).  But one of my favorites is essential oils!

You will be surprised at just how much those little bottles can help and today we'll talk about six different oils for the new year:

For Clarity, Focus, & Energy:

Peppermint-One of my favorite oils!  It’s cool and refreshing, stimulates the mind, and helps support memory, focus, and concentration.  Just add a few drops to your diffuser or even inhale it straight from the bottle.

Rosemary-To fight fatigue, reduce nervous tension, and improve alertness.  This can also be diffused or inhaled straight from the bottle.

Lemon-Lemon is especially warming, stress-reducing, and mood-boosting.  When used aromatically, it even helps with energy.  Totally invigorating!

Grapefruit-An excellent stress buster and is very beneficial in reducing mental fatigue.  The most popular use for grapefruit is in the diffuser but you can also mix with fractionated coconut oil and massage onto your wrists and neck (known as “applying topically”).  I also drop this onto my essential oil diffuser necklace all the time!

And for Calming, Relaxing, & Grounding:

Frankincense (the “king of oils”)-Promotes feelings of peace and relaxation.  You can diffuse this oil, or apply it topically to the bottoms of the feet.

Lavender-I’ll say, over and over again, how sweet, calming, and relaxing lavender is!  It can help you calm down after a busy day and it promotes a restful sleep.  I will typically diffuse it, but it can also be applied topically, or you can place a couple of drops on your pillow as you’re going to bed.

As a final note, when choosing essential oils, it’s always important to do your research and make sure you’re buying therapeutic-grade oils that are made with the purest ingredients.  For me, I choose doTERRA and we always have doTERRA oils and products available in our shop, from our online store, or through my official doTERRA site.

At From Scratch Farm, we focus on helping others find more natural and organic products for their family and home.  Most of our products are handmade, but essential oils make up a large amount of our offerings and are a natural fit with our goal of healthier living.  If you’re looking for a bit of help with maintaining clarity, focus, energy, and staying nice and grounded in 2018, I hope you’ll give essential oils a try.  Have questions?  You can find me through emailFacebook, Instagram, or at the store Tues-Thurs and Saturdays from 12-6pm.  Here’s wishing you and yours all the best in the new year!
