Does Your Child or Teen Struggle with Writing? Hill Country Owl Tutoring Can Help!
So, our kids are still pretty young, but one question I’ve seen asked several times on local Facebook groups recently is, “Where can I find a good tutor?” If you’ve been wondering the same thing, you’re certainly not alone. After all, it’s our job as parents to be concerned with the education of our children, right? To do our best to ensure that they receive the help they need to succeed? And with school, work, sports and other extracurriculars, church schedules, family activities, and more…it’s easy to see why our kids may need just a little more help in some areas, sometimes (and why we don’t always have the time to provide that help on our own). Well, today I’d like to introduce you to Joyce Towers of Hill Country Owl Tutoring. We know from Joyce’s Facebook page that,
“She has a B.A. from Rice University, with a quadruple major in American English, History, Political Science, and Sociology. She worked for over 35 years in Corporate and Marketing Communications for companies and corporations in Austin and San Antonio. Never one to stand still, after retiring Joyce started Hill Country Owl Tutoring to encourage youth to pursue their educational goals.”
And because she’s a writer herself and knows her story better than anyone, I’m just going to let Joyce tell you exactly what Hill Country Owl Tutoring is all about!
I started Hill Country Owl Tutoring because I believe many kids need help in writing. During my long career, while my kids were in school, and to this day, I’ve watched people struggle with writing in a way that is clear, concise, organized, and easily understood. This can have far-reaching impacts on overall school success! And, the need to write coherently extends into life beyond high school; in college, business, even personal correspondence. Getting a command of these skills early on will pay off long term.
High schoolers—in particular—face all kinds of essays, research papers, even essay questions on exams. This is true regardless of whether or not they are headed for college, and often performance on these is a substantial percentage of the final grade. English, History, Government, Social Studies, Communications—writing is involved for all these subjects. And while students learn the writing basics long before ninth grade, many struggle when it comes to the writing assignments in high school.
That’s where I come in. Hill Country Owl Tutoring provides instruction in real-world writing skills for high schools in the Boerne and Bandera areas. The idea is to help kids figure out what a good essay is and to be able to write one on demand. I DON’T belittle or judge and I try to keep sessions light and smooth (I think my own kids and their friends would say that I connect well with teenagers and their parents). I don’t write papers for my students either—it’s the principle of teaching a kid to fish as opposed to just serving it for dinner.
I don’t believe writing is some kind of mysterious talent that you’re just born with. It isn’t rocket science—just practical, simple, and organized instruction. I have, and can, teach people how to communicate effectively in writing, whether it’s for an English paper or a college essay. And the process doesn’t have to be deadly boring, overwhelming, or overly long: I try to bring some humor to the table, maybe even a little fun. There’s just nothing quite like seeing the light come on when they “get it”! With a student’s willingness to learn and motivation to improve, your support, and the help of Hill Country Owl Tutoring, we can get the results we all want.
And that is what we all want, right? Results? Whether we’re able to provide that for our kids or need to reach out to someone else for a bit of help? We, as parents, certainly can’t do it all on our own, and we aren’t meant to!
Joyce’s tutoring sessions are one-hour in length and typically take place at a public library or other similar location. Prospective new clients will receive a free one-hour assessment (with both parent and student involvement) and a proposal tailored to the individual student’s needs. Have questions or want to book your free assessment? Contact Joyce through Facebook or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Oh, and if you’re looking for Joyce outside of her tutoring schedule, you’ll likely find her spending time with her family on their ranch, taking part in prehistoric artifact digs, birding, or working towards her Texas Master Naturalist certification…a true Hill Country explorer and lifelong-learner at heart!
