Adorable Goats, Handmade Goods, & All the Fall Feels: Farm Shop Fridays Are Here!
More and more these days, I’m understanding just how great it can be to give and receive things that are made in small batches—by actual hands rather than a machine—and that are truly unique. And with a plethora of local events such as Diva Night, Boerne Handmade Market, Christmas Market Days, and Oma’s Christmas Fair, it’s easier than ever to shop for those handmade, unique gifts right here in Boerne…not to mention, have a lot of fun! And this fall we can add one more opportunity to shop handmade and support local, small businesses in our community, with the creation of Farm Shop Fridays in nearby Sisterdale.
Farm Shop Fridays are a collaborative effort between two local small farms (and next-door neighbors!) ROSEWOOD and Eden’s Promise Goat’s Milk Soaps. Each Friday, owners Dondi Persyn and Lorie Diller, respectively, throw open their gates to welcome folks to explore their farms and barns, shop their lovely selections of handcrafted beauty and home products, and meet the adorable four-legged residents of their homesteads. If you schedule in advance, you can even bring a group to participate in a soap-making workshop where Lorie will show you, first-hand, just how she creates her fragrant, velvety smooth, almost-pretty-enough-to-eat goat’s milk soaps.
Naturally, when I first learned of this, I thought, “A farm? With goats? Using our hands to create? And shopping too?? Sign me up!” So, at the suggestion of a fellow Women’s Group member, that’s just what we did for our October get-together!
We met at Lorie’s home on a blustery Saturday afternoon and were welcomed by a warm, smiling face and an equally warm and inviting farmhouse kitchen. We took a few minutes to get to know each other and listened as Lorie told us all about her soaps and how Eden’s Promise came to be. Then we dove right into helping to make a batch of our own!
Additionally, a few brave souls tried the goat’s milk kefir, or fermented milk, known to be loaded with various vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. The overwhelming consensus was that the kefir probably would have tasted like Greek yogurt had we not placed watermelon-flavored drops in it to counter the sour taste; a lesson learned for our next kefir encounter!
The soap we made as a group had to cure, which takes several weeks, so once we were done in the kitchen, we wandered over to Lorie’s studio to shop…and boy, oh boy, were we met with a surprise! The studio was so cozy, the display was unbelievably beautiful, and there were so many choices for soaps, bath bombs, lotions, and accessories that it was hard to decide what to take home! Nobody left empty-handed, that’s for sure.
Once we were able to pull ourselves away from all the wonderful products, we moved outside to meet Lorie’s sweet goats and do what our Women’s Group does best: chat and get to know one another. What a great event this turned out to be!
Sounds like a whole lot of fun, right? Well, by making the short drive to Sisterdale for Farm Shop Friday, you’ll not only get to meet Lorie and explore her farm and products, but you’ll also have the opportunity to meet Dondi at ROSEWOOD, where you’ll find more wonderful soaps, creams, salves, fresh herbs and wreaths, farm-fresh eggs, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and more. Looking for laid-back country/Boho clothing and accessories? Or home decor? Then you’ll want to check out ROSEWOOD’s online shop as well.
