Family Fun Alert! San Antonio Botanical Garden's NEW Family Adventure Garden

Family Fun Alert! San Antonio Botanical Garden's NEW Family Adventure Garden

We stayed local over spring break and had so much fun doing things like attending an art camp at Maker’s Place, taking coding classes to learn to build apps on the iPad, exploring Cascade Caverns (post coming soon on that one!), and checking out the new Family Adventure Garden at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.  The Family Adventure Garden was just so much fun that you know I have to share all about it!

We started our day at the Botanical Garden at the gift shop because, you guessed it, we forgot something.  This actually turned out to be a fun little stop on our adventure as it was filled to the brim with garden and nature-themed gifts, mementos, household décor, and books.  Of course, there were also drinks, snacks, grab-and-go lunches, and the sunscreen we were looking for…pretty much everything you need for a super fun day at the Garden and more:

Then, we wandered in the direction of the new Family Adventure Garden.

This is really an amazing, must-see and must-do activity if you’re local and have small children.  I was completely blown away by all of the simple little things they thought to utilize to create a fun and informative play and adventure space for the kids.  Like Tumble Hill:

And shaded sand boxes:

And hula hoops that were just laying out on the lawn for anyone to use:

And what kid doesn't love a good tunnel?

Mini-escapes, everywhere you turned:

The Muhly Maze:

Limestone Ledge, Thunder Ridge, and No Name Creek (which were by FAR our kids’ favorite part of the whole day!):

There were plenty of opportunities for “monkeying around":

And storybook houses, a performing stage (complete with an entire bin full of dress-up clothes!), and nature collages to incite creativity in kids and adults alike:

And can we take a second to just appreciate the beautiful scenery, everywhere we turned along the way?

The Family Adventure Garden stretches across 2.5 acres and there’s never a dull moment on this journey.  If you do need a place to stop for some rest, shade, lunch, water, or a restroom break, there is the Prickly Pear Pavilion conveniently located right in the heart of it all.

After we had explored the Adventure Garden, we took the opportunity to see what the rest of the Botanical Garden had to offer (and let the kids’ clothes dry a bit before loading up into the car!).  We journeyed through the Japanese Garden:

And as much of the rest of the 38-acre Garden as we could before the kids started craving a rest:

This was such a perfect family outing, in every way.  It took us maybe two hours to explore the Family Adventure Garden which is perfect for a day-trip with small children or a play date.  I wish I would have done better research before going and known about the water-play feature beforehand because there were a lot of kids just wearing swimsuits for the day and that would have made more sense than taking ours fully-clothed!  I suggest bringing refillable water bottles, lots of sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc. and snacks.  Soon we will see the opening of Rosella at the Garden, a restaurant which will offer coffee, breakfast, brunch, lunch, and cocktails either indoors at the historic Sullivan Carriage House or outdoors on the patio.  We had planned to have lunch here on our visit, but it was not quite open and ready for customers yet.  We’ll just have to go back again so we can try it next time. 😊

Have you made it out to the San Antonio Botanical Garden lately?  Did you explore the Family Adventure Garden?  What was your family’s favorite part?
