We are not a big family-photo-taking kind of family. It’s not that we don’t like having them done or appreciate having them to look back on…we just don’t make time for it often enough. It’s one of those things where we say, “We need to have family photos done soon” and then six months later, “We really need to have family photos done soon!”. Which is why my website has featured the same images from Baby’s NEWBORN photo shoot for the entirety of its existence. They're beautiful photos, yes, but I've known for a while now that it was definitely time for an update! Then, wouldn’t you know, I received the swift kick in the you-know-what that I needed to have new family photos done when I connected with a sweet lady by the name of Jennifer Ligon through Instagram. Jennifer is a Texas Hill Country-based wife, mom of two boys, and owner and photographer at Jennifer Ligon Photography. She captures stunning photos at all stages of life to include Couples, Wedding, Maternity, Newborn, Family, Graduation, Lifestyle, Day-in-the-Life photos, and more. Y’all say “Hi!” to Jennifer!
And just take a look at some of my favorite images from her portfolio!

Easy to see why we chose Jennifer as our photographer for a much-needed update to our family album, right? And the process couldn’t have gone any more smoothly than it did. We picked a date that worked for everyone’s schedules, she immediately suggested the Cibolo Nature Center and Farm as a setting (which I’ve been DYING to have photos done there, so that was an easy “Yes!”), and she determined the perfect time to meet for beautiful sunset photos.
Well, it turned out to be overcast and crazy humid the evening of our shoot, so the sunset did not quite cooperate, but we had so much fun that it didn’t matter anyway! The kids loved running the trails, throwing rocks in the creek, collecting sticks and flowers, and climbing everything in sight. I think that having a bit of room to roam and get the wiggles out actually helped when it came time to corral them to sit still for a photo here and there. They didn’t feel like they were being forced by a photographer to cooperate with a photo shoot. They were having a great time…and smiling for a picture here and there in the process. It was all so easy!
Jennifer already had the required photography permit to take photos at the Nature Center, knew all the best spots for picture-taking there, and wasn’t afraid to put herself in a precarious situation or two to get the shot:
She had an awesome ability to play with the kids to get their attention, and her patience was much appreciated when one of them refused to move from a spot until they were done collecting all the tiny little sticks in that spot. You know how it goes, right?! She also had a great eye for catching those impromptu shots like this one, where Big Girl climbed up on top of a GIANT tree stump and Dad went to to make sure she didn’t fall…”Hey, smile!”:
This one where Dad was helping our Big Guy get back to the car because his new shoes had rubbed blisters on his little feet:
And this one where I was holding Baby while the others were having their picture taken and he started to remind us that it was getting really close to bedtime:
We had such a wonderful time with this photo shoot, which is something that I’ve very rarely said after a family photo session with small children! It’s been wonderful getting to know Jennifer a bit over the past few weeks as well. I, of course, asked her some questions to include in this post so that you can get to know her a bit too and here’s what she had to say:
SS: Tell me a little about your family.
Jennifer: I've been married to my husband Mills for five years, but he went to high school with my older brother, so I've known him for almost twenty years. We have two boys; Knox who is two-and-a-half and Porter who is six months old. As a family we love to be outside swimming, riding bikes, exploring the nature trails, and hiking.
SS: How long have you been taking photos and why did you start?
Jennifer: I've been taking photos since I graduated from high school in 2009 when I took senior portraits for a few of my friends. I've always loved photography, but I really got into it when my oldest was born. I decided to make my business official at the start of 2017 and it has been growing so perfectly for our family ever since!
SS: What’s your favorite style of photography to shoot?
Jennifer: My favorite type of photography is Lifestyle. I love things like Fresh-48, At-Home Newborn, and Day-in-the-Life sessions. The photos that make you laugh and smile are almost always real moments of your family being exactly who they are.
SS: What’s your favorite part about what you do?
Jennifer: I like meeting new people and getting to know families. I shoot a lot of newborns, so families are usually SO exhausted and SO in love.
SS: Can you tell us one thing that’s made balancing momlife/homelife/running your own business easier for you and your family?
Jennifer: Working from home is hard, so a strict schedule really helps me stay on track! My husband and I are both very routine-oriented, so having a clear outline of when we are on kid-duty and when we are working helps get everything done. Plus, the new lock on my office door really helps keep my tiny assistants out of my hair when I'm busy. 😉
SS: What exciting things are in store for your business in 2018?
Jennifer: I'm adding new things all the time, but I'm so pumped to now offer Day-in-the-Life sessions because they are my absolute favorite! These are four-to-eight-hour sessions that are carefully planned out and designed to capture your family living real life. The possibilities are endless!
I'm honestly already brainstorming ideas for a Day-in-the-Life session myself, but have you been meaning to schedule a photo shoot to update your family's album too? I can't say enough about our experience with Jennifer Ligon Photography: Jennifer's a great communicator; full of fun, creative ideas; and amazing with the kiddos. Her pricing is on point AND she's offering a special for April and May: $50 off all one-hour family portrait sessions and $150 off all Day-in-the-Life sessions with the mention of this post!
So, take advantage of the special and whatever you do, don't put it off for forever like I did! Those memories are important and we both know that if you don't ask for help in getting pictures done, you will have exactly TWO in your entire family album that actually have you in them. Jennifer can be reached directly through email, Facebook, or Instagram so shoot her a message to book your session...and tell her I sent ya to save!
