May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Join Us for #Maynicures at the Witte!
I cannot believe it’s almost May, you guys! And do you know what that means (besides Cinco de Mayo and the quickly disappearing school year, that is)? It means it’s Mental Health Awareness Month and since its inception in 1949, millions of Americans have been made aware of the importance of safeguarding their mental health through annual media campaigns, local events, and screenings. This year, I am so grateful to have been asked to partner with Clarity Child Guidance Center of San Antonio for their “One in Five Minds” campaign.
This campaign is designed to bring attention to the fact that children can suffer from mental illness as well as adults. In fact, one in five do. That’s one in five children right here in our own neighborhoods, and even in our own homes, who are suffering from one or more mental illnesses such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and more. To put that in perspective, that’s 80,000 children in Bexar County alone and only one in five of those will actually receive treatment! What does that mean for those kids? Well, it can mean failure to complete high school, illicit drug and alcohol use, criminal activity that lands them in the juvenile corrections system, and even suicide in some cases (source).
The One in Five Minds campaign was created not only to increase awareness but also to take action by breaking down the stigma that is often associated with mental illness and increasing access to treatment. They do this through educational literature, presentations, and workshops with an overall goal of “provid(ing) important information, resources, and a community so that families no longer struggle alone” (source).
So how can you help? Well, you can join me in participating in the #Maynicures campaign for awareness. It’s simple:
1) Paint four fingernails on each hand in one color, then paint the remaining fingernail in a second color. This one, differently painted nail on each hand will symbolize the One in Five Minds.
2) Take a photo of your painted nails and share them on your favorite social media accounts with the hashtag #Maynicures and tag the organizations in the graphic below.
3) Challenge your friends to do the same!
The #Maynicures challenge will run the entire month of May so there’s nothing saying you're limited to only doing it once. Use this as the perfect excuse to get back into your #selfcaresunday routine and share a photo of your #Maynicures nails every week if you want! Challenge new friends each week and sit back and be amazed by how far this challenge will go.
Love the sound of that easy, free, at-home way to get involved but still want to do more? Then join us on Sunday, May 6th from 1-4pm at the Witte Museum for a #Maynicures kick-off party! This will be a family-friendly event with DIY nail painting stations, live music, outdoor games for kids, art activities, face painting, a fun photo booth, Kendra Scott trunk show, food, and non-alcoholic drinks. So grab a friend, get your #Maynicures on, snap your pics, and share away! This event is FREE but donations are encouraged and tickets are required. You can get those tickets here. All funds raised will support Clarity Child Guidance Center’s mission of treating and supporting children with mental illness in Bexar County.
So show me your #Maynicures, friends. Post your photos, use the hashtag, challenge your friends, and tag @1in5minds and @sowingseedstx so I can see those pretty nails too! And I hope to see you on May 6th at the Witte!
