What's Old is New Again: Meet Boerne's Rustic Heart Resale & Vintage Treasures
When Lanette and George Garvin first realized they had a mutual dream of packing up their Cypress, Texas home and moving to the Hill Country, they simply thought it was something that may happen…someday. But when they happened upon a beautiful home on acreage for sale in Bandera, there was no denying that Hill Country calling.
“We just couldn’t pass it up,” says Lanette. “We looked at that one home and we were in love. So, we made a beeline for the Hill Country and never looked back.”
That was three years ago and when the Garvins first came to our neck of the woods, Lanette worked as the on-site health nurse and Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) Coordinator for a local company here in Boerne. In the summer of 2018, however, she fell victim to company downsizing and her position was one of several that were eliminated.
No stranger to change or shaking things up when necessary (she served an entire career in the petrochemical industry before choosing to go to nursing school, after all), Lanette recognized an opportunity amid her misfortune and made the decision to take a sheer leap of faith.
“I used to visit and shop the previous resale store that was located where we are now. I’ve always had a passion for vintage and George has always wished for a retail space to showcase his furniture. So, when the opportunity of opening a shop presented itself to us, I was reminded of a quote: ‘Twenty years from now, you’ll be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do, than by the ones you did do.’ So, we went for it!”
And just like that, seemingly overnight, Rustic Heart Resale & Vintage Treasures was brought to life in a cheerful, pastel-yellow 1948 ranch home on Johns Road. Filled to the rafters with vintage baskets, bottles, books, and baubles—and a whole lot of other things that don’t necessarily start with a “b”—it’s a veritable treasure trove of items once cast aside by some, and meticulously rescued by another.
“I like to tell people that we have old, new, and everything in between. We have home decor, upcycled items, clothing—anything I can find that is unique, one-of-a-kind, pre-loved, or vintage. It makes me happy to find, share, and decorate with goods that someone else once treasured. I find it fascinating…and I always love it if someone has a real story behind an item that I’ve discovered.”
And as for the new? Well, that part falls to George, the owner, creative, and maker behind Garvinworks Handcrafted Rustic Furniture.
“George is a hair band rocker, turned quality control manager, turned custom woodworker—Garvinworks is just a tiny facet of his many talents. He makes beautiful custom furniture from his workshop on our property; from large items such as farmhouse dining tables, bunk beds, coffee tables, and church pews for outdoor wedding chapels, to things as small as wall signs, paper towel holders, and holiday decor. There really isn’t anything he can’t do.”
And the couple have wasted no time settling in and planting their Boerne roots. Rustic Heart opened its doors this past March, had its Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting in June, and since then, they have become active members of the Hill Country Women in Business (HCWIB), the Boerne Retailers Group, and even the Boerne Jeep Club.
“What great groups of supportive and motivating folks the HCWIB and Boerne Retailers Group are! They support and give back to many different organizations within our community and I’ve felt right at home with them both from the beginning. And I can’t say enough fabulous things about the Boerne Chamber president, Kim Blohm, and her amazing staff. They have helped and supported us in so many ways; we can’t thank them enough.”
And speaking of the Boerne Retailers Group giving back, the very first Boerne Retailers’ Style Show & Shopping Event is slated for Saturday, September 21st at The Bevy Hotel, and you can bet Rustic Heart will be there.
“This is going to be an amazing event and one that I’m so proud to be a part of. The whole evening will kick off with appetizers, drinks, and shopping with some of the local retailers, then we’ll all be treated to a one-of-a-kind style show emceed by Mayor Tim Handren himself. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Kendall County Women’s Shelter. It will be an event not to be missed, for sure!”
Every other non-workday, though, if she’s not exploring the Hill Country by Jeep, you’ll likely find Lanette relaxing with her two adorable and quirky labs—Duke and Willow—her chickens, and the various deer she’s befriended in Bandera. Or maybe she’s visiting her daughter and grand-dog in Houston while cheering on her beloved Astros. Or gardening, kayaking, camping, or even “teaching George how to catch some real fish.”
“Life is short, and beautiful, and should be enjoyed. There are a lot of things that make me happy and finding treasure is one of them. Which, reminds me of another saying that I have really taken to heart: ‘Collect things you love that are authentic to you, and your house becomes your story.’ And if I can do that and I can help you to do that while shopping small, supporting local, and giving back to a wonderful community like Boerne, then I think that’s a win for everyone, don’t you?”
Now, GO, explore, and have fun…and don’t forget to tell ‘em I sent ya!
